SZURA LEON AGE 94, OF BRIDGEVI...

SZURA LEON Age 94, of Bridgeville, formerly of Sewickley, passed away Wednesday, June 10, 2015, in Allegheny General Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. He was born September 16, 1920, in McKees Rocks, a son of the late Peter and Nellie Kruk Szura. He was a US Naval veteran serving during WWII, a past music supervisor for the Quaker Valley School District with 34 years of service, and was a member of the St. James Catholic Church, where he was the choir director for 20 years. Leon was a very talented pianist and provided piano accompaniment for Sophia Tucker, Mel Tormé, Nat King Cole, Kitty Kallen, and other entertainers. While the director at St. James Church, he met three other choir members and formed a band called The Shy Guys. Surviving are a daughter, Dottie (John) Hawkins of St. Augustine, FL; a son, Leon G. Szura of Charlotte, NC; three grandchildren, Mary Julia Hawkins of Ellington, CT, Leon G. Szura II and Patrick Szura of NC; a great-grandson, Rylan Fischer; and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death in addition to his parents were his wife, Dorothy Syka Szura; and a brother, Walter Szura. Friends will be received on Saturday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. and Sunday from 1-5 p.m. in the JOHN SYKA FUNERAL HOME, INC., 833 Kennedy Drive, Ambridge, from where a Prayer will be offered Monday at 9:15 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. in the St. James Catholic Church, with Father Bill Schwartz, officiating. Interment will follow in SS Peter & Paul Catholic Cemetery.
